Rising energy costs and stagnant revenues motivated Jeff Bratz manager of the Western Racine County Sanitary District Treatment Facilities to seek methods to control costs.
Jeff teamed with IntelliSys, Inc. and installed the EnergyVIEW energy management software solution. The objective of EnergyVIEW is to improve the speed and quality of power measurement information so that facility management professionals will be able to make better management decisions, conserve energy and reduce operational costs. The project included the addition of one electrical metering device and interfacing to an existing SCADA system to collect data from several major power distribution centers at the facility. EnergyVIEW software provides smart energy metering with a real-time display of energy use and current cost in dollars per hour. The energy data is also saved in a database for report generation and long term historical trending and analysis.
Within the first month of operating the energy management system Jeff gained knowledge on the effect of time-of-day energy rates for his facility. He stated, “The real-time monitoring and reporting enabled me to see and record how much energy was used at any time of the day and approximately how much it cost.” Jeff made several changes to the plant standard operating procedures including the shift of intermittent high energy process operations to off-peak hours.
Based on the changes to operating procedures future savings of over $17,000 per year are being achieved. Based on the calculated savings the initial investment in the EnergyVIEW system installation will be paid for in four months.
The energy management system has spurred several additional projects at the plant which will result in significant additional energy savings in the future.
